The long-term preservation of the exceptional Neolithic vestiges at Chalain and Clairvaux was due to the stability of their wet environment. Since the level of Lake Chalain was artificially lowered in 1904, however, this stability has been disrupted.
The sites are threatened in a number of ways, and all of the archaeological sites are in danger of disappearing sooner or later. The future of these archaeological zones-long the domain of collectors and currently under the pressures of a heavy summer tourist season-is in question.
