The Font-de-Gaume bear
A bear standing on its hind legs is drawn in the middle of a series of stalagmitic pillars, after passing through a narrow opening. With its massive body and raised head, the Font-de-Gaume bear is depicted with its forelegs stretched out in front of it. A hint of its coat can be seen and a small round eye completes the red line drawing. The animal is perfectly set atop the cylindrical support. Its bipedal position is dictated by the characteristics of the support. The artist has given the bear a highly symbolic setting in the depths of the cave.
