Norbert Aujoulat (1946–2011)

Curator of heritage, founder of the Cave Art Department at the Centre national de la Préhistoire (Directorate-General for Heritage), Norbert Aujoulat was above all one of the undisputed specialists in Lascaux. In particular, he took part in the study of a large number of decorated sites in France (Vézère and Beune valleys, Chauvet cave, etc.) and abroad (Spain, Portugal, Namibia, South Africa). Centre des monuments nationaux entrusted him with the study of the Font-de-Gaume cave. The latter owes him a debt of gratitude for the conservation policy that has recently been successfully implemented. Norbert Aujoulat combined the knowledge of a speleologist, karstologist and cave art specialist.
