The Font-de-Gaume rhinoceros
Drawn in red, a woolly rhinoceros hides in the fissure at the end of the cave. Like the mammoth, this massive animal was covered in a thick fleece. Adapted to harsh climates, it disappeared at the end of the Palaeolithic. The rhinoceros is not very commonly seen in cave art. Here, it is unique and depicted with incredible attention to detail. The heavy head is carried low. The two horns and even the coat are indicated by a few precise, skillfully drawn red lines.
