The horses of Font-de-Gaume

The complex reliefs on the walls of the side gallery have been used to depict three horses, drawn in black. Two of them are particularly noteworthy. Their upright manes, robust bodies and dynamic movements are reminiscent of today’s Przewalski horse, the horse of the Mongolian steppes that is often compared to the wild horse hunted by prehistoric man.
