The mammoths of Font-de-Gaume

The mighty iconic animal of prehistory plays a more restrained role at Font-de-Gaume. At least that’s the impression we have today. And yet there is a veritable herd of them lining the walls of the main gallery. Engraved and painted, the mammoths all follow the same design. The head is high and domed. The neck is pinched and the back slopes gently towards the groin. The tusks are barely visible.
