- Food for the dead
The deceased person was given meat, dishes, drinks, jars and the objects essential for his eternal life in the next world. These were arranged like a banquet as it would have been held in the earthly world and which would continue in limbo. In one section of the grave there was a pile of objects made of perishable material which have left no trace. The large sacrificial knife is placed with the animal offerings, generally quarters of pork arranged in such a way as to suggest an entire animal. Jewellery, tools, small objects from daily life, locks and keys symbolising the house, were placed with the burnt bones of the deceased. Some were accompanied by their weapons, toolboxes or special objects.
