- Jules Quicherat (1814-1882)
Jules Quicherat was a palaeographic archivist, archaeologist and art historian. In 1855, during the dispute over the location of the siege of Alesia, Quicherat supported the hypothesis of Alphonse Delacroix, who argued that Alesia was located at Alaise (Doubs). The excavations ordered by the emperor at Alise-Sainte-Reine in Côte-d'Or soon proved them wrong. From 1871 to 1882, he was head of the École des Chartes. Quicherat is particularly known as the author of an important work on the history of medieval art.
