Jules Quicherat (1814-1882) was an archivist and archaeologist, and specialist in the Middle Ages. He played a major role in the debate surrounding the identification of the site of Alesia and vehemently defended the argument that it was located at Alaise, in the Franche-Comté region. In 1847, he inaugurated the teaching of national archaeology at the École des Chartes.
