One of the finest examples of military architecture from the 12th to 13th centuries, the Krak des Chevaliers (Qal’at al-Hosn) is the most significant castle built by the Crusaders in the Near East, both in terms of the quality of its construction and its exceptional state of conservation.
A large number of archaeological research programmes spanning several decades have enhanced our understanding of Medieval and Early Modern military architecture in the Near East and the people who built these fortifications.
