More than twenty centuries ago, a new type of estate was created – the villa. Described by Latin authors as both a rural residence and a large-scale farming institution, the villa spread to all of the western provinces of the Roman Empire. As part of a larger network of communities and farms, villas made a lasting contribution to the landscape and to agriculture.
