Archaeological villa sites were identified in the first half of the 19th century, and they continue to be studied down to the present day, particularly as part of rescue archaeology operations. Two centuries of research in France have yielded major advances in our understanding of these rural residences, with the publication of large-scale excavations and the development of new investigative methods.
