After the Chamber of the Bear Wallows, the Red Panel Gallery is characterised by a significant narrowing of the space underground and by a clear change in the nature of the cave floor. It is marked by a glimmering expanse of rimstone, evoking a frozen waterfall, the orange/reddish colour of which contrasts with the cave’s very pale limestone. This colour is a result of the water being full of iron oxide after flowing over the cave's extremely old clay fills. This recent (Holocene) rimstone masks the archaeological floors.
