Babylon, "Gate of the Gods" in Akkadian, has been known since the 3rd millennium. Political capital of the kingdom of Hammurabi (1792-1750), it became the largest city in Mesopotamia in the 1st millennium B.C. Religious and political capital of Babylonia, it houses the royal palace and the cultic complex dedicated to the god Marduk.
