A large horse gives the panel its name. The care used for the head and neck contrasts with the remainder of the body which is less well-developed; this difference in treatment is similar to what is seen in the horses in the Panel of the Horses.

The drawings are remarkably well-preserved. Both the clay film and altered limestone have been exploited. The marks associated with their creation are apparent, showing the direction and order of their execution: excess material pushed to the edges of the lines, residual furrows and involuntary finger contacts. Similarly, on the chest of the large horse, the clay film has been more lightly smudged to soften the contrast.
