- Ibex skull in the cave floor
Towards the back of the Brunel Chamber is a completely intact ibex skull sealed into the floor by a thin film of calcite, which indicates the early nature of its presence in a gully where it must have been deposited during a particularly humid climatic event. The skull is of an adult male. The regular curve of the bony bumps that supported the horns (which do not become fossilised!) enable us to state that this is an Alpine ibex (Capra ibex) and not a Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica).
