A test pit was dug down to the original silt ("virgin soil") in the temple of Ishtar area revealing shallow alternating horizontal layers of sandy clay, silty and ashy soils containing fewer and fewer artefacts as the archaeologists neared the base corresponding to the preparatory level of the urban settlement.
