Although the archaeologist was probably right in assuming that one basin was for cold water and the other for hot water, their designation as "baths" is probably incorrect: their size – the largest is 45 cm high, 100 cm long, and 77 cm wide – and especially the general lack of holes to drain the water at the base suggest that ablutions were performed by pouring rather than immersion. The hole at the bottom of the toilet base is the outlet to the drain pit into which waste water from the room flowed.
