Denticulated blades from City II

Denticulated blades from City II
6530

Around 2500 BCE, light blades characteristic of City II were used to produce new agricultural tools attesting to a radical change in land cultivation and crop preservation practices. In southern Mesopotamia, since the Early Dynastic Period I, these blades had a denticulated cutting edge which increased efficiency by making it easier to cut grain stalks using a curved sickle with a continuous edge. The retouched cutting edge also helped reduce blade wear. When the cutting edge was damaged, the insert could be turned around and the opposite cutting edge retouched, giving some tools an original morphology, with two denticulated edges.
