In 1858, Alexandre Bertrand (1820-1902) was appointed secretary of the Commission de Topographie des Gaules. A former teacher of rhetoric at a Rennes secondary school, he was a member of numerous scholarly societies. He was editor of the Revue archéologique and a specialist in megaliths. From 1866, he was the director of the musée de Saint-Germain. He was elected to join the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres in 1881, and was appointed president of the archaeology section of the Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques in 1894.
