Gabriel de Mortillet was a curator at the musée gallo-romain (1868-1885). In 1866, he became a member of the Société d'anthropologie de Paris, of which he was appointed president in 1875. He became mayor of Saint-Germain-en-Laye in 1882 and parliamentary representative for Yvelines in 1885.
