Preparatory plate showing Gallic coins

7866

This plate, showing Gallic coins discovered during excavations at Bibracte on Mont Beuvray, was produced as part of the preparatory work for the publication of the Dictionnaire archéologique de la Gaule-période celtique. The many plates showing Gallic coins that illustrate the dictionary bear testimony to the scientific methodology of the Commission de Topographie des Gaules.
The study of numismatics was led by two of the commission’s members, Félicien de Saulcy, its president, and Anatole de Barthélémy, one of its secretaries.
