This plate by Camille Germain is taken from the collection Exploration archéologique du massif montagneux de l'arrondissement de Nice, sent to the Musée gallo-romain. A correspondent of the Commission de Topographie des Gaules (CTG), from 1874, Camille Germain surveyed remains in the hinterland of Nice, as well as producing copies and estampages of milestones. He was an engineer for the Ponts et Chaussées and his training explains the high level of detail in his surveys. The CTG’s work benefited from the skills of its collaborators, skills which contributed to the rise of archaeological science.
