In the 1890s, Émile Cartailhac, from Toulouse, was tasked with completing the Dictionnaire archéologique. To help him, Salomon Reinach, then deputy curator at the musée des Antiquités nationales, gave him the documents collected by the Commission de Topographie des Gaules that were conserved at the museum. Cartailhac’s work on this important and complicated task was unpaid and required much correspondence with Reinach. Cartailhac died in 1921, without seeing the publication of the dictionary’s final volumes.
