In his book, Félicien de Saulcy wanted to identify the geographical locations of Julius Caesar’s eight great campaigns in Gaul. He studied the events of each campaign separately and made in-depth studies of the sites that were thought to have been the setting of these large-scale military actions, to produce what he considered to be a work of military archaeology.
