This glass plate photograph shows a large-scale reconstruction of a ballista produced by Verchère de Reffye. The ballista, now part of the collections of the musée de Saint-Germain, was photographed in the château’s courtyard. This ballista is an example of the first attempts at experimental archaeology, ordered by Napoleon III. It was used in experiments in front of the general public.
