This old photographic print is taken from a glass plate which was probably produced before Napoleon III’s excavations began in 1861. It shows Mont Auxois, which stands over the small town of Alise-Sainte-Reine, and is one of a set of photographs aiming to show the precise location of the supposed site of Alesia. In the 19th century, these prints, glued to paper, were collected together in large white Italian-style albums.
