The second volume of the Histoire de Jules César is dedicated to the Gallic Wars. To support what was written by Caesar in The Conquest of Gaul (also known as Commentaries on the Gallic War in English or De Bello Gallico in its original Latin), Napoleon III referred to the excavations carried out by the Commission de Topographie des Gaules in 1861 and 1862 at Alise-Sainte-Reine. In the book, he included records and maps produced by the Commission de Topographie des Gaules. However, he gave only a partial view of the commission’s discoveries.
