Epigraphic record taken from notebook 21 by General Creuly, 1869

7787

Notebook 21 contains 16 pencil drawings of inscriptions conserved at the bibliothèque de Strasbourg. Produced in June 1869, the drawings are particularly precious as the inscriptions were partially or entirely destroyed in a fire at the library on the night of 24 to 25 August 1870, while the city was besieged by the Prussian armies.
As with the other copies produced by Casimir Creuly, a member of the Commission de Topographie des Gaules, these pencil drawings of inscriptions stand out for the detail of the copies, his respect for the shape of the letters, and the systematic inclusion of the dimensions of letters, margins, line spacing and the entire monument. In this way, Creuly made a significant contribution to the application of scientific methods to epigraphic work.
