This sketch by Nicolas Gosse (1787-1878) is all that remains as evidence of a large order made by the emperor in 1854 to decorate the salle du Trône of the palais du Luxembourg. Eight panels, painted by different artists, were to illustrate the greatest moments of the imperial dynasty. Napoleon III paid close attention to the influence of the imperial museums and closely followed the work carried out there.
