This portrait of Count Émilien de Nieuwerkerke is a watercolour drawing by Princess Mathilde. Nieuwerkerke, appointed superintendent of the Beaux-Arts and director of the imperial museums by Napoleon III, put in place a real cultural administration working to develop and diversify museum collections, and established new museographical principles. He ordered the systematic publication of catalogues for permanent collections.
