This painting, by Xénophon Hellouin in 1870, was inspired by the discovery of a burial chamber near Argenteuil in 1868, excavated under the supervision of Le Guay, an architect and correspondent of the Commission de Topographie des Gaules. Also called Gaule préhistorique, this oil painting on canvas was displayed at the Salon in 1870, before being acquired by Napoleon III and given by the emperor to the musée gallo-romain at Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
