This page is taken from Album noir no. 5. The majority of pages in this album relate to the excavations carried out at Alise-Sainte-Reine at Napoleon III’s request. Napoleon III wanted to find traces of Alesia. The excavations, initially carried out by the Commission de Topographie des Gaules (1861-1862) and continued by Eugène Stoffel (1862-1865), uncovered an abundance of artefacts, which were immediately drawn, restored and photographed. However, relatively little of the findings was published.
