In November 1856, Raymond de Coynart adopted the viewpoint of Claude Rossignol, who argued that Alesia was located at Alise-Sainte-Reine. For him, it was a “historical, archaeological and military question”: this officer from the Dépôt de la Guerre and expert cartographer claimed that based on Caesar’s movements during his campaigns, from a strategic point of view the siege could only have taken place there.
