The question of Alesia’s location was resolved with Anatole de Barthélemy’s 1867 paper Alésia, son véritable emplacement. Taken from the Revue des questions historiques, the article was clearly in favour of Alise-Sainte-Reine. It was published after the first excavations around Mont-Auxois and was based on a numismatic study which showed the correlation between the period of the siege and coins found on the site.
