Pencil rubbing of an inscription from Nizy-le-Comte

7756

This inscription from Nizy-le-Comte in Gallia Belgica is a dedication, by a local judge, of a part of the theatre to the emperor, the local gods and Apollo. A rubbing of the original inscription was made using pencil. This was another technique for the reproduction of inscriptions, alongside estampage, and involved placing tracing paper or another fine paper over a stone surface and rubbing graphite on it to obtain an accurate image of the relief of the stone and the inscription.
