A renowned numismatist, Henri de La Tour was responsible for completing the work of the Commission de Topographie des Gaules on Gallic coins.

The author of the Atlas de monnaies gauloises

The project to produce a general catalogue of Gallic coins, asked of the Commission de Topographie des Gaules by the Ministry of Education in 1876, was not completed before the CTG’s dissolution in 1879, nor before that of its successor, the Commission de Géographie historique de l'ancienne France, in 1883. In the late 1880s, Henri de La Tour, then assistant librarian at the department of medals and antiquities at the Bibliothèque nationale, was asked to complete the Atlas de monnaies gauloises. Thanks to his work, the atlas was published in 1892. Today it remains an important reference work.
