Mas d'Azil carved disk with cow and bullock

Disc discovered by Marthe and Saint-Just Péquart during excavations of the Magdalenian layers of the Mas d'Azil Cave at Mas d'Azil (Ariège). This appliqué, which was probably sewn onto clothing, was cut from a scapula and engraved on both sides with figurative patterns. On one side one can make out a female auroch, and on the other a young bison.

Object on display in the form of two casts (obverse and reverse), in the Palaeolithic Gallery of the National Archaeology museum - Domaine national de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Length = 5.1 cm; Width = 4.9 cm; Thickness = 0.1 cm.
