The "Venus" of Tursac

Statuette discovered by Henri Delporte in 1959 during excavations of the Gravettian layers (ca. 25,000 years BP) of the Facteur Tursac Shelter (Dordogne).

Made from a pebble of amber calcite, this statuette of a female figure is fairly schematic, without head, arms or breasts, but with a very marked stomach and buttocks. The legs, devoid of feet, are bent, thus creating a point that perhaps served to anchor the statuette in the ground.

Statuette on display in the Palaeolithic Gallery of the National Archaeologicy Museum - Domaine national de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
