Hypogeum of the Three Brothers. Palmyra

Rapt de Ganymède. Hypogée des Trois Frères. Palmyre
8939

Painted vault: the rapture of Ganymede painted in a medallion, circa 150-250 CE.

In Greek mythology, especially in the works of Homer, Ganymede is a very beautiful young man from Troy who is kidnapped by Zeus. When Zeus sees him grazing his flock, he turns himself into an eagle, snatches Ganymede away and makes him his lover. He then becomes cupbearer to the gods.
