Hypogeum of the Three Brothers. Palmyra

Hypogée des Trois-Frères. Palmyre

Painted vault. A central medallion depicts the rapture of Ganymede surrounded by a decorative structure of tangential hexagons.

In Greek mythology, especially in the works of Homer, Ganymede is a very beautiful young man from Troy who is kidnapped by Zeus. When Zeus sees him grazing his flock, he turns himself into an eagle, snatches Ganymede away and makes him his lover. Ganymede then becomes cupbearer to the gods.

150-250 CE.
