Walter Andrae, a German archaeologist, excavated the city of Babylon in the late 19th and early 20the centuries, under the direction of Robert J. Koldewey. He made many drawings and watercolours. This one is entitled "Grabung im Nordpalast sowie der Löwe von Babylon" (Excavation of the Northern Palace and Lion of Babylon). It shows groundwater flooding the trenches, preventing deeper excavation.
