The spiral minaret of the mosque in Samarra, Iraq, inspired the artists who depicted the tower of Babel before archaeological excavations revealed its square shape. The Samarra Mosque dates from the 9th century BCE and is representative of Abbasid art. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
