Before the discovery of the Esagil tablet, reconstructions of the Babylon ziggurat drew inspiration from other ziggurats known in the Near East and from the foundations uncovered in Babylon. This drawing was made by Robert J. Koldewey (1855-1825), a German archaeologist famous for his excavations of the Babylon site.
