The flag pole is one of the major features of the port. A practice adopted by the island’s other port towns, a ship’s mast was erected on a raised area to communicate with ships on the high seas by means of three signal flags, known as pavillons in French. In Saint-Denis, the base of the mast is surrounded by a building.
