The present-day cement render coping did not exist in the 1980s. It may have been laid over the remains of an earlier masonry course. According to accounts, the well was converted into a superstructure in the 1970s. The imprint of postholes were found at the corners of the outer paving of what may have been the upper surface of the original coping.
