Despite its current name, these are not the ruins of a starch plant but rather a fibre plant. The raw material, kader or choka (Furcraea foetida), is a woody plant introduced on to the island in the 19th century. Many patchy areas of the plant were identified in the area under investigation. The hypothesis of a "kader mill", a small textile fibre production unit, has been proposed to explain the existence of these ruins.
