The Desbassayns habitation in the district of Saint-Gilles in Saint-Paul was one of the largest colonial properties on the island. An average of 440 slaves, commanders and servants worked on the estate that derived its wealth from sugarcane farming. The illustration shows a smoking chimney stack and various buildings.
