Just as the first coffee plants were being imported from Arabia by the Compagnie des Indes orientales to be grown on Bourbon, an indigenous coffee plant was discovered; it proved coffee could grow on the island, and within a short time its inhabitants were required to plant it. Administrators went as far as sending specialists to Arabia to advise the population, and learned tried and tested Indian farming and processing techniques.
