How LiDAR works

LiDAR data is acquired by flying over an area with a scanner emitting multi-directional high-frequency light pulses in a near-infrared wavelength. The aircraft’s position and direction is revealed by its positioning system, and the device records the time it takes for emitted light to travel to the ground and back; this time is used to calculate distance on impact.
